Reasoning errors are broader than logical fallacies. Logical fallacies are named flaws within arguments. Reasoning errors also include the inner habits and pressures that make a weak argument feel believable.

Reasoning errors do not always lead to a false answer. A person can reach the right conclusion for the wrong reasons. The problem is that poor reasoning cannot be trusted to produce accurate results again and again.


Why confidence is not a sign of correctness

Confidence is a feeling. It is not proof.

People often feel most certain when a belief fits their identity, religion, family, group, or personal history. The belief feels familiar and safe, so the mind may treat that feeling as evidence.

Marilyn Monroe, part one: bad premises

Consider this argument:

  1. Premise 1: No women walked on the moon before 1960.
  2. Premise 2: Marilyn Monroe was a woman.
  3. Conclusion: Therefore, Marilyn Monroe was not allowed to walk on the moon.

At first glance, this looks like a logical argument. It has two premises and a conclusion.

However, the premises do not support the conclusion.

  • Fact check 1: No person walked on the moon before 1960. The first moon landing happened in 1969.
  • Fact check 2: Marilyn Monroe was not an astronaut.
  • Fact check 3: Marilyn Monroe died in 1962.

The conclusion says she was “not allowed” to walk on the moon. Nothing in the premises proves that anyone stopped her.

  • The date 1960 is unrelated because no one had walked on the moon by then.
  • Not walking on the moon does not explain why she did not walk on the moon.

The argument adds a hidden assumption: Marilyn Monroe did not walk on the moon because NASA discriminated against her.
