Primary Causes of Blindness

Only one of the three primary causes of blindness involves the eyes. And, the other two causes are actually responsible for the majority of all blindness. What’s more, these last two causes of blindness are things that we choose.  Can you guess what they are?

In many parts of the world the three primary causes of blindness are:

1) Diseases of the Eye
2) Religion
3) Politics

Medical science is successful in treating the diseases of the eye such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy.  But, these physical ailments don’t cause the majority of blindness.  Religion and its tool politics remain the two major causes of blindness.  These two cause irreparable impairment of perception, logical reasoning, and rational judgment.  Why do people choose this type of perceptual blindness?

Perception Blindness

Not all religions cause this type of blindness, only those which use specific mind control tactics.  What we are talking about are those employing systems of indoctrination and programming molding values and thinking.  These systems are the most harmful because they establish boundaries and limitations on independent thought.  In essence, they tell you what to believe.  They tell you what is wrong and what is right.  This indoctrination often starts early in childhood.

And, the effects of this type of systematic indoctrination depends upon how integrated you’ve become in the propositions they are selling.  In many cases, these systems sell hate, spawn genocide, wars, and discrimination of races, ethnicity, and gender.  All the while proclaiming they are agents of love.  Those invested in these paradigms must cherry-pick doctrines to fit their needs. Without a doubt, this describes the characteristics of the Abrahamic Religions. The Western organized religions of Semitic origin, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. These religions are the re-branding of mythologies of the ancient Egyptian, Persian and Babylonian empires. In other words, mythology presented as fact.

So, even if you aren’t a follower of one of these religions you are probably still affected by the colossal social reach of these paradigms.  As a result, the level of influence depends on how much social integration they have in your life. There are specific tools of doctrine for integrating people into these paradigms.

1. Mandatory membership and allegiance to a Supreme Being, (God or Gods)
2. The justification for what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior and values
3. Required belief in the afterlife, or life after death with either rewards or punishment

Sadly, people in charge of many governments place the dogma and values of these religious traditions above the fair and equitable treatment of all people and the environment.  It’s been a battle that isn’t new.

The Medicine for Religion

The struggle of mankind to free itself from the control of these religious maladies isn’t new.  But, it is causing a widening gap in the world’s culture. The modern culture has one foot stepping forward into the enlightened future.  The foot moving forward is built upon the advancements of science.  The other foot is firmly rooted in the above-mentioned mythologies of the past. There is a medicine for this type of mental disease.  Therefore, logic, reason, archeological and scientific facts are the antidote.  But, it’s a hard pill to swallow.  This disease is in control of many cultures.   There’s just too much money and control at stake.

In every era, there are people who awaken.  If there is room in the culture, they free themselves from the spiritual prejudice of these paradigms. But, this struggle is not without consequences. Persecution continues in today’s modern world.  If you do not align with the dogma of the correct mythology then being ostracized is the least of your problems.  Their religion and its leaders empower a range of atrocities in the name of their deity.  Through politics and sometimes violence, they are able to maintain control and dominance in the culture.

Politics probably blinds us as much as religion.  This is because politics is often just a tool for mandating religious ideology.  So, we must take responsibility for our own mind.  And, so learn how to disengage from the rhetoric.  Instead of following the dogma conduct our own research, learning to discern the facts from fiction. The problem is the political machinery is designed specifically to persuade from this course.

Actions You Can Take

The growth of awareness results in the illumination of conscience. The issues mentioned above have always been there.  We simply decided to take off the blindfold that is causing the blindness.  Unfortunately, just being aware of the issues it doesn’t eliminate them.  You have work to do both internally and externally.

Internal Issues

The internal issues relate specifically to our Paradigm.  This is our worldview.  It contains the filters through which we see reality.   Furthermore, it’s like the blueprint for our thoughts, beliefs, and values.  This mechanism of the mind also includes our Ego housing our personality and instincts.   There are two choices in dealing with the side effects of greater awareness.

1. The first option, Ignore insight of paradigms inner thought life, values, and beliefs.  The issues will keep coming up but you simply decide not to deal with them.  Perhaps you can watch more TV?  If this is your option, you will be attempting to suppress the information provided by the new insights provided by conscience.   I definitely don’t recommend this approach. It puts you in a constant state of conflict known as cognitive dissonance.

Cognitive Dissonance

Cognitive Dissonance is the mental discomfort (psychological stress) experienced when simultaneously holding two or more contradictory views, beliefs, ideas, or values.  If you are experiencing this kind of distress it’s time to take a break.  Then when you’ve regained emotional equilibrium engage in your own independent research.  Remember to be gentle with yourself.  Trust your intuition.  This type of discomfort is trying to tell you something is wrong.  Don’t run from it.  Face it with logical reasoning.

2. The second option, do something about your increased awareness and growth of conscience. If you decide to do something congratulations! We need more people like you.

How can you learn about the internal aspect of our Paradigm? One of the best tools we’ve found is the Enneagram of Personality Profile.  This is a questionnaire that reveals the default mechanisms of your personality and instinct.  Learning about this default setting will help you greatly understanding how and why you’ve been drawn to certain likes/dislikes and how you function socially.  The main takeaway here is finding out you aren’t isolated to the default settings.  You can learn to access and operate from different vantage points.  This is the essence of inner learning.

Now, for the external choices.

External Choices

1. Here, again, the first option is to ignore our conscience.  You can pretend it is someone else’s responsibility.  Then find a way to deal with the guilt resulting from having a conscience.  See also, Cognitive Dissonance above.  We certainly don’t recommend this option.

2. The second option for external options is similar to the internal above, to accept the consequences of our awareness of the issues.  Consequently, we can decide what we are able to do within our sphere of influence.  If you chose this option, Congratulations on helping out!  The world needs more people like you willing to put actions behind your thoughts.
