Explore without an Agenda ― Expecting the Unexpected Eureka Occurrences

A common issue in spiritual practice is our expectations.  When we set expectations for our spiritual practice, we create roadblocks.  We also miss other significant eureka occurrences because we are bound by our expectations.

Learn to Explore Without an Agenda

A good teacher manages your expectations. They refrain from providing examples of what to expect.  This is because expectations can cause roadblocks.  You distort your own experience looking for the example.  Rather, a smart teacher gives detailed instruction but doesn’t lead you with what to expect.  Then, they ask a lot of questions about your practice.  For that reason, learning to practice and explore without an agenda is important.

This is a “best practice.” You can apply this to almost every kind of spiritual practice. It’s a good approach life in general.  Living in the moment without an agenda will help you in several ways.

First, it minimizes your anxiety over the process.  Many people worry about doing it right.  If you are engaging in the process to the best of your ability, that’s doing it right.  Spiritual practice is not about perfection. Everyone’s experience of the practice is different.  So, if you are practicing, be proud of yourself.  You are doing it! Second, it will help you spot the lessons.  Third, you will recognize more synchronicities and omens to help guide your way.

The most significant eureka occurrences come when you learn to explore without an agenda.  Anxiety over reaching a preconceived experience will keep you from finding it. So, allow your practice to be easy and without expectation. Then, you will be more likely to have an authentic experience. — Guru Tua

You need to be in the right type of positive learning environment that supports your individual practice.  So, you won’t find this type of spiritual freedom following the regiment of organized religion.

Mindset for Eureka Occurrences

It starts with a healthy skeptical and positive mindset.  Whatever you do simply approach with a beginner’s attitude.  Give it your attention, follow the process.  This is the mindset for expecting the unexpected.

Guess what?  You are probably missing most of the significant aspects about your growth.  That is unless you are using a spiritual journal.  This is a simple but effective device that will help you see incremental growth, spot trends and roadblocks.  A spiritual journal is the first tool for your spiritual toolbox.  You’ll create several and they will come in handy.

If you use a spiritual journal, it will open your eyes to the subtle eureka occurrences of incremental growth.  We all long for those mind-blowing jumps of awakening.  But, most of the time it is a gradual process.  Learn to explore without an agenda or expectations.  Use a spiritual journal and you’ll set a solid foundation for your practice.

Create Your Path Expecting the Unexpected

Practicing without an agenda doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have goals.  Everyone should have goals for their spiritual path. For example, developing a well-rounded practice is a goal we hope everyone will adopt. Perhaps the Enneagram Personality Profile is something you want to learn about.  So, a goal would be to read books by three different authors on the subject by the end of the year.

Or, maybe you want to learn Japa meditation so you set a goal to research possible teachers. Maybe topics like the virtues of the spirit or spiritual gifts are of interest. In this case, you make lists of potential sources.  Finding your personal truth may be among the primary purposes of your practice. So, you research the possible ways you can reach this long-term goal.

Use your intellect and intuition as your guides to develop your own path.  Explore this opportunity we call life. It’s all about awakening and developing our potential.  Creating your own path is essential.  Be open to new ideas and happy accidents, expecting the unexpected is the mindset of the explorer.

Consciousness Development Tools

Everyone has their own way of awakening.  And, each of us has spiritual gifts to aid in this quest.  These gifts are sleeping in our DNA.  So, waking these gifts is the key.  It sets our spiritual walk into motion.  It opens our minds to new potentials.

Accessing these gifts was the central goal of many ancient cultures.  And so, we benefit from generations of research.  The results are a set of powerful tools anyone can use. We call these tools spiritual technologies.  These are sound methods for expanding awareness and exploring consciousness.

Above all, these tools stand up to the test of science. They are repeatable experiential phenomena. And, higher states of awareness also have unique measurable physiological signatures. They differ from the basic states of consciousness (waking, sleeping, and dreaming).  These processes do not require belief in a religion. All you need to do is follow the process.  For the most part, these tools come from Eastern traditions.  This is probably because their focus is on developing human potential.

Other schools of thought have a similar eclectic approach.  For example, Gurdjieff’s approach was to adopt what is already proven to be effective.  After all, human physiology hasn’t changed in thousands of years.  So, the work of the ancient pioneers stands the test of time.

Spiritual Technologies

Spiritual technologies are tools for exploring consciousness.  They result from generations of research by cultures around the world. These processes stand up to the test of science. They are repeatable and measurable. They do not require belief in religious doctrine.  So, everyone who can follow a process can use them. We call the practice of these processes spiritual exploration.

You can list these tools in several ways. Some fall into more than one group.   We like this simple method.

In Conclusion

Above all, learn to explore without an agenda. Anxiety will keep you from finding what you desire. So, allow your practice to be easy and effortless.  Use a spiritual journal and explore always expecting the unexpected.
