Freethinkers

Leo Tolstoy is probably the first to use the term Freethinkers. Everyone “thinks” they are a Freethinker.  But, few can demonstrate this ability.  See if you can…

Try it yourself.  See if you can point out the fallacies with the arguments, propositions, and positions of any news program.  If you can’t identify at least two or more in one segment then perhaps you too could use some assistance.

The Mind is a Muscle

The mind is like a muscle.  It needs to be training in order to be strong.  People do resistance training to build the strength of their muscles.  Freethinkers train their minds in a similar way.  They study and practice the use of simple logic. You don’t need to have knowledge of mathematics to understand when an argument likely to be true or false.   Practicing the use of inductive logic, as well as, other analytical methodologies associated will give you a huge edge in life.  These processes are commonly referred to as the ‘scientific method.’

Learning these skills of observation and analysis will enable you to see reality without overt prejudice and judgment.  You probably won’t be able to eliminate 100%.  But, you can get close.  It’s a perspective which allows you to investigate ideas outside of your world-view.  Freethinkers have a unique ability to suspend the programming of the natural mind to see only what it expects to see or understand. They don’t automatically fear what they don’t understand.  Or, fear ideas that are outside of their paradigm.  They have the ability to see the mechanisms behind customs, beliefs, and paradigm boundaries of all types that others simply cannot. This is a skill you too can cultivate with a little effort.  It’s well worth the time because it will open doors to move beyond the programming you’ve accumulated living in our modern culture.

Why are there so few Freethinkers?

Freethinkers are indeed rarer today than ever, because of the constant bombardment of the programming of the culture. We are constantly being programmed not to think in terms of common sense or logic.  So, it is hard to shift perception unless you diligently and regularly apply one of the consciousness technologies of meditation or contemplation. Stepping outside of the programmed messages, suspending our constant internal chatter is like a reset button for the mind.

The Scientific Process

The scientific method is a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry is commonly based on empirical or measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the scientific method as “a method or procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.”

Although procedures vary from one field of inquiry to another, identifiable features are frequently shared in common between them. The overall process of the scientific method involves making conjectures (hypotheses), deriving predictions from them as logical consequences, and then carrying out experiments based on those predictions. A hypothesis is a conjecture, based on knowledge obtained while formulating the question. The hypothesis might be very specific or it might be broad. Scientists then test hypotheses by conducting experiments. Under modern interpretations, a scientific hypothesis must be falsifiable, implying that it is possible to identify a possible outcome of an experiment that conflicts with predictions deduced from the hypothesis; otherwise, the hypothesis cannot be meaningfully tested.

So, here’s the tools that will help you find the facts from the fiction.  Study and use of logical reasoning, logical axioms and tools for spotting logical fallacy are the antidotes. These tools will direct you to conduct your own research using sources from outside the religious paradigm you currently hold.

Would you like to become a Freethinker?

Learning to be a Freethinker includes a number of processes we call “spiritual technologies”. These are the process of expanding awareness and investigating other states of consciousness.  The application and practice of logic and logical tools is just one aspect that is available.  The logical mind is just one of these technologies.

What are Spiritual Technologies?

In essence, spiritual technologies are methods of developing your potential.  In short, these mental tools focus on expanding awareness and consciousness.  And, these processes stand up to the test of science – repeatable and measurable. Anyone can use them. It’s like baking a cake. If you follow the directions, you get something delicious. We call the practice of these processes Spiritual Exploration.

Of course, there are several ways to list these processes. It’s important to note some of these tools could easily be in more than one category:

  • Logical reasoning is one of the first tools we study. This includes the companion tools, spotting logical fallacies and logical axioms.   Above all, these are essential tools for any spiritual explorer.  They are able to sharpen your ability to discern fact from fiction.
  • Another important basic toolset is the “inner work” methods like The Enneagram Personality Profile.  These help us to understand the mechanisms of Ego, personality, and instincts. They also provide a doorway to understanding the virtues and gifts of the spirit.
  • Progressions of seated meditation are the heart of the practice.  This includes a range from Basic Mindfulness Meditation through Japa Meditation and the Siddhis of Patanjali.
  • Next, progressions of moving meditation. For instance, several methods of energy collection, like Forest Bathing, Qigong, and Tai Chi.
  • Awareness and consciousness expansion pathways such as  Lucid Dreaming and the Shamanic Journey or Guided Meditation.
  • And last but not least, several healing modalities, such as Reiki, and Shiatsu.
