Intention ― The Garden of Our Mind

The mind is like a garden. “Intention” is our creative thought which is fueled by the ‘fire’ of our emotions. Generally speaking, most people are on board with this line of thinking.  Here is the hard part.

The Mind is Like a Garden

Our thoughts are the seeds we are planting in our garden.  You can’t just plant random seeds any seeds.  You need to plant seeds which will grow into the things you want.  Also, you can’t just plant seeds and forget about them.  Your garden needs daily tending.  You’ve got to water and weed in order to get the harvest you want. Get the picture.   Our intention is a living entity.  It needs daily cultivation if we want it to grow the things we want.

Your “self-talk” is a good barometer of the trajectory of your creative thought life. You are thinking constantly.  This means, your self-talk already has direction and momentum.  What you need to do is treat it like a garden.  Make sure your creative thought energy is reinforcing the fruit you want it to produce.

Becoming aware of your self-talk is most important.  If you aren’t tending your self-talk then you’ll be growing things you may not want.  It takes time and patience to tend the garden of your creative thinking.  Like any good gardener, you’ll need both patience and self-awareness.  Expanding your awareness is definitely one of the important keys to growing the power of your intention.  Positive emotions can ramp up the intensity and velocity of our intention.

When affirmations don’t work

First of all, if you search the web you’ll find there is an emphasis on positive affirmation as a means of “getting what you want.”  No doubt about it.  If affirmations are used properly they direct the trajectory of your intention.  Again, most people are on board up to this point. Here’s where it gets harder.  Affirmations are also seeds in our garden analogy.  If your affirmations aren’t manifesting what you need to look at the ground where you’re planting.

Unfortunately, if the soil is depleted and full of weeds your good seeds won’t be able to grow.   Affirmations alone won’t change the trajectory of your thoughts and intention.  This is because we already have a number of negative thought processes that already have momentum. You can use affirmations constantly, but fail to get a good harvest.  Because the ground is full of rocks and weeds.  If you’re like the majority of people you probably have a history of negative self-talk, emotions, automatic judgments and behaviors.  When you keep putting these thoughts out into the Universe, it returns you move of the same.  You can’t overcome this issue by throwing seeds of affirmations on top of this type of soil.

Most importantly, you can solve this problem.  You can treat the soil.  You’ll need to dig down get past the conscious level of thought. Continuing with our analogy of the garden, you’ll need to get to the root causes of your negative self-talk, emotions, and behaviors.  The weeds and rocks and other old stuff buried in the ground that’s preventing your ability to grow good plants.   This inner work generally isn’t rainbows and unicorns territory.  It’s hard stuff, but it can and should be done. Your life is worth it.

Repairing the soil of your self-talk and emotions

Are you ready to do some mental and spiritual gardening? There are a number of tools that are useful for this purpose.  Most importantly, we highly recommend that you don’t’ try to go it alone. You may be walking your path, but you don’t have to tackle the obstacles alone.  This is a brave adventure and there is much to gain.  You aren’t alone in this quest.  Joseph Campbell calls this the Hero’s Journey.  There are two basic approaches:

  • analytical tools leverage the power of the logical mind
  • spiritual tools leverage the power of the intuitive and spiritual side of the mind

Analytical tools for Intention

Below are the outlines of two recommended analytical approaches.  This path often appeals to those who like structure, the Enneagram Personality Profile and the Study of Inductive and Deductive Logic.

The Enneagram

The first approach to this problem is by using the analytical processes of the mind.  The first tool we recommend is the Enneagram Personality Profile.  This will help you identify and understand the self-talk and emotional links that are a part of your default personality settings.  We need our Personality and instincts.  They connect us to our consciousness.  But, we are not our personality.  It is simply a tool.  By studying how your personality and instincts work to shape what you think and value you’ll also learn you have access to many other personality aspects.  This will also shed light on what we’ve accumulated via our life history.  Our past can be a trap or a learning experience to help us shape our future.  The Enneagram Personality Profile is also a spiritual tool which can be the gateway to investigate many aspects of the mind and spirit.

You can use the free online RHETI by the Enneagram Institute to delve into this powerful technology and resource.  Once you take the Enneagram Personality Profile test you may find that it resonates with you more than you thought it would.  Those of the Enneagram “thinking center” types five, six and seven find this one of the best starting places for their journey.  Enneagram type 1 are also attracted to this approach because they are focused on organization and structure.  All personality types will benefit from the use of these tools because it provides a written document for guidance.  It “forces” them to see the facts.

Study of Logic

Our educational systems have by in large become institutions which teach and measure the memorization of material.  We aren’t taught critical thinking skills around the use of logic.  Business uses statistical tools like six-sigma for problem-solving processes.  It does not deal with the larger issues about the premise of arguments on which the values and beliefs of our paradigms are based.  This is what we want to get at.  This is another venture where we take a shovel and dig up the earth, the foundation of our judgments, values, and beliefs.

You shouldn’t be afraid of this approach.  It doesn’t require the understanding of mathematics, or statistics.  In fact, this type of practical logic doesn’t require the use of math at all.  It deals with the concept of probability from a practical standpoint of the arguments used to sell us stuff. It helps us see the correct and incorrect use of inductive and deductive arguments. We are sold more than material things.  We are sold ideas, ideologies and other scary stuff like religion.

Spiritual Tools for Intention

There are a number of spiritual tools that can help you uncover the rocks in your garden.  Fact is, inner work is all about the refinement of our garden.  Inner work should result in positive fruit for you, and the world.  There are specific spiritual technologies that are excellent at improving your spiritual soil, The Shamanic Journey, and Lucid Dreaming.

Shamanic Journey

The shamanic journey is one of the processes associated with Shamanism.  This “spiritual technology” assists in opening a doorway to a unique state of consciousness.  Michael Harner noted anthropologist, educator, and author called this state, “The Shamanic State of Consciousness” (SSC). In this state the brainwaves are the theta-wave are around 4 to 7Hz.  SCC is similar to another non-ordinary state known as bliss consciousness or transcendental consciousness.   SCC can be used to heal the mind, body, and spirit.  Or, just to explore. It is one of the primary “spiritual technologies” of mankind transcending all cultures.  It’s another one of our default states of awareness waking, sleeping, and dreaming.

The process involves using our intention to enter a separate state of consciousness. Drums, rattles or singing bowls are employed to produce a specified tone/beat.  The use of vibration alone to open the doorway to SCC enables full control over the process in both depth and duration.   We recommend this substance-free approach to SCC.  Many traditions use this method.  With sound, you are in complete control of the depth and duration of the session. When you use chemicals to assist in the journey you cannot control the depth or duration of the session. Even qualified Shaman recognize there are uncontrollable variables in the potency of substances and mixtures involved.  Additionally, everyone has a different reaction even with similar dosages and batches.

Lucid Dreaming

Lucid dreaming is being aware of the dreaming state, and also being able to exert some degree of control over your actions and the environment.

There are several techniques for achieving a lucid dreaming state.  And, They all involve the development of intention.  Some use a combination of mantra along with setting your intention just prior to going to sleep.  You can start by expanding your awareness to “remember your dreams.”  This expansion of awareness is also exercising your intention.  As your intention becomes more powerful, you’ll remember more dreams. Then you will have more success reaching the lucid dreaming state.

The dream state is the easiest place to begin expanding awareness.  You’ll see the new level of awareness immediately. One of the best practices to begin this process is to begin using a spiritual journal.  Start by writing down your intention to remember your dreams.  Set your intention before you go to sleep. Then record your dreams first thing when you awake.  Soon you will start remembering more of your dreams.  And, the fragments will also be like pieces of a puzzle that will come together to form a pattern or message.  The Universe is always talking to us and our dreams are one of the best ways to connect with this intuitive knowledge.

How does Emotion Fit In?

Our Emotions are the river running through everything.  It is the water, the fuel that can give our intention velocity and power.  It provides persistence when we encounter obstacles.  And, you’ll notice I didn’t say “if” but when.  Because you will encounter obstacles.  You’ll need “positive” vibes from within and without.

Even though you may be traveling your own path, you’ll benefit from a friend or better yet a tribe on your side.  Our recommendation, seek people who accept you where you are.  You don’t need critics to judge your path.  It’s helpful if you find warriors of light who may have traveled the same roads and overcome the similar roadblocks. This is where we come in.
