The eternal and the temporal meet in harmony when you are present. This is why you are here. This is what the world is waiting for. Stop living your life on autopilot.
When You Are Present The Real You Shows Up
When you are present, it is natural to enjoy the simplest things and situations in life. That’s because the real you shows up instead of just your Ego. There is more than one way to be present. You can be “jolted” into the present by a traumatic event, by mediation, and sometimes just by a glimpse of a sunset. Almost any experience can be a doorway. These momentary or temporary occurs when we find presence.
“The eternal and the temporal meet in harmony when we are present.”
— Guru Tua
When you are present, then you experience a sense of harmony with our eternal nature. It’s an almost undefinable simple joy. It is possible to live in a state of continual presence. But, something happens that gets in the way.
So, the question is, are you present? If you aren’t living your life with a sense of harmony and joy there’s a problem.
Living Your Life On Autopilot — The Problem
Why do we live most of our life on autopilot, missing these opportunities? Our soul seeks out and craves these moments when we achieve presence. However, our mind wants to maintain control, so it presents counterfeits to keep us busy. Our mind substitutes counterfeit superficial desires for the needs of the soul. This is why material possessions often seem empty when we finally get them. This is known as “buyer’s remorse.” We feel the ache in our spirit when we’ve tried to substitute the temporal for the eternal. When we are present we are experiencing the eternal and this takes the control away from the mechanisms of personality and instinct.
How do we solve this problem?
How do we move beyond this cycle of being led by the mind’s counterfeit desires? How do we can gain control of the vehicle rather than just riding in the backseat? We can learn about ourselves through a systematic process like the Enneagram of Personality. This process of test questions will enable us to get an intellectual understanding of our particular personality profile and instinctual stack. In doing so, we learn these mechanisms of the Ego are just tools of consciousness.
The Real You — The Observer
These mechanisms of personality are tools, they are NOT “us.” We are the Observer. We are who is listening when we talk to ourselves in our heads. The mind wants to maintain control because it is temporary and not eternal. So it presents these elements of personality as counterfeits for “us” when in fact they are not.
Of course, we could also learn these same truths by trial and error, but it could take a lifetime. Either way, to take back the steering wheel of our awareness we need to learn about what triggers our emotional overrides, and what it takes to calm the mind so we can be in the driver’s seat.
The Observer is the Real You! The real us is what some call Source. That is, Source is the underlying consciousness in everything. You’ve probably heard the statements, “We are One,” “We are all Connected.” This is how to begin to not only understand this intellectually but experience it first-hand. When we are present we are connected with this Source of pure consciousness. Bottom line, when we are present — the real you shows up. This is what the world is waiting for. Stop living your life on autopilot!
The Ultimate Goal of Presence
Through the use of the Enneagram and other similar inner work, we learn to deal with the self-sabotage that gets in the way of presence. The things that thwart our progress toward integration. Integration is the process of bringing the Observer into control, rather than just reacting to the default mechanisms of personality. As we described above, when we are present we connect with Source.
We are Observer a reflection of infinite Source. So, the ultimate goal of presence is to unite us with our divine nature, our source. So, how do you stay connected with source?
Are you present?
Here is a simple but effective way to increase your presence. Set a reminder on your smartwatch at least 4 times a day. In the reminder place the simple three-word question, “are you present“? This will serve as a reminder to check on yourself.
You can use a simple form of beginning meditation to gently move your awareness to the present moment. Because being present makes you feel better. It encourages rational versus emotional thinking.
Additionally, there are several methods that will increase the bandwidth of your awareness and help you to maintain presence. These tools are what we call spiritual technologies.
What are Spiritual Technologies?
Spiritual technologies are methods for exploring awareness and unlocking our spiritual gifts. Of course, there are several ways to list these processes. We like this simplified list. It’s important to note some of these tools could easily be in more than one category:
- Logical reasoning is one of the first tools we study. This includes the companion tools, spotting logical fallacies and logical axioms. Above all, we consider these essential tools for any spiritual explorer. They can sharpen your ability to discern fact from fiction.
- Another important basic toolset is the “inner work” methods like The Enneagram of Personality. These help us to understand the mechanisms of Ego, personality, and instincts. They also provide a doorway to understanding the virtues and gifts of the spirit.
- Progressions of seated meditation are the heart of the practice. This includes a range from Basic Mindfulness Meditation through Japa Meditation and the Siddhis of Patanjali.
- Next, progressions of moving meditation. For instance, several methods of energy collection, like Forest Bathing, Qigong, and Tai Chi.
- Awareness and consciousness expansion pathways such as Lucid Dreaming and the Shamanic Journey or Guided Meditation.
- And last but not least, several healing modalities, such as Reiki, and Shiatsu
Use these tools to help you show up in your own life. The world wants to see the real you show up.
